* SURFING ON THE INTERNET - BY J.DAVIDSON *
******************************************************************
This series is aimed at people who own modems, both on the ST, PC,
and I suppose Amiga too. It will give you hints and tips on
getting the best out of your modem, and show you the best BBSs
to go for.
Since my dad got a new modem for his PC, (sorry, it's his buisiness
computer, and it's an internal one, so it was only £90 for a 14400
baud fax modem with voice capabilities! I can't afford one for my
ST (i'm only 16 and earn £20 per week!)) i've been surfing around
on the super information highway out there. I've come across some
good BBSs for the ST and PC, and will talk of those in this file.
Firstly, I have to admit, Commworks for Windows is the best online
program i've used, it's so user-friendly. I have not had any
expirience using ST comms software. When I first used the modem, I
kept leaving without telling the other computer, and I understand
that this can cock up the BBS software. Sorry to anyone I annoyed
by doing this.
Right, now for my favourite BBSs. These are all ST only BBSs and
are totally dedicated to ST users and have absolutely loads of ST
P.D. online. My favourite is the Chameleon, which apparently is
connected to the largest ST network in the UK, with over 1 GB of
files to download. It's very user friendly, especially if you use
ANSI, and has Internet email access. I love reading the Red Dwarf
and Beavis and Butthead stuff, some of it is really funny. Another
good BBS is Keith's point. This is a small one, but again is very
user friendly, with quite a lot of stuff available. These are the
two I mainly use, and can be contacted for email etc under the
name of James Davidson. Next month I will look at two more ST
BBSs.
Phone numbers:
The Chameleon (01454) 881095 (Chipping Sodbury)
Keith's Point (01332) 662988 (Derby)
If you want to contact me directly on my modem then phone me on
(01608) 684 308, and ask for James. Please phone me by voice first
to tell me to get my computer set up, otherwise I wont know what's
going on when I hear a load of beeps etc. Bye for now, J.D..
I can be contacted at these BBSs:
Keith's Point, ADlib, the Chameleon and Index 3 under the name of
James Davidson. Please e-mail me, even if it is to say hello.
